Following the elections in the Democratic of Congo, it was recognised that security at the British Embassy Compound in Kinshasa needed updating. We were asked to redesign the entrances into the compound and also to consolidate the number of vehicle entrances into the Embassy.
The existing perimeter fencing was amended to form a visual screen from the outside, a vehicle and staff pedestrian guardhouse and a visiting pedestrian guardhouse.. We reduced the vehicle entrances into one single entrance/exit and built one emergency exit route.
We designed the project in its entirety and project managed the works on site. We took the opportunity to train the local workforce, giving them the skills to maintain some of the work we carried out. The project was completed to a very high level of workmanship.
The security works provided a high level of safety for all embassy staff. The new gatehouses enable staff to enter the compound separately to visitors and have secured the compound for at least the next 25 years.
