Following the purchase of the adjacent building to Canada House by the Canadian government, FCO Services was appointed to help return Canada House to its former glory and connect the two buildings internally.
The brief included the creation of a modern workspace to house 260 staff, an open plan function room on the 6th floor, reinstatement of historical roof lanterns and a double height library room.
FCO Services acted as Project Advisor from pre-acquisition through to completion. This service included: feasibility studies, structural and planning advice, design team and contractor selection. Cost monitoring and a clerk of works were provided to monitor progress throughout the project.
There were many challenges during the project, coordinating the different floor levels when linking the buildings and the poor structural condition of the 6th floor, identified during the initial stages. FCO Services Project Advisors ensured that these issues were addressed in a timely manner and that works were coordinated to mitigate impact to High Commission staff remaining on site.
Opened by Her Majesty the Queen, the revitalised building serves as a showcase for Canadian art and design and for the first time allows all High Commission staff to work in the same building.
The FCO Services contribution to each stage ensured that the project was successfully delivered to a high standard of design and construction.
