Measuring global carbon
Situation
Governments around the world are united in trying to reduce their carbon footprint in an attempt to limit the effects of greenhouse gases on the environment. The British Government responded to this challenge by requiring all its departments to measure and monitor their own carbon footprint. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) had no means of measuring or monitoring its worldwide carbon footprint.
Solution
Using Sharepoint technologies which are integrated with MS Office applications and enable a fully collaborative approach with posts and missions across the globe, our technical team designed and built a Global Carbon Calculator - a web site enabling staff wherever they are based to enter details related to carbon emissions. With the data captured, it is stored and can be used to create reports. A number of graphical and statistical management reports can be automatically generated by the system
Impact
Having access to this data means the FCO has information about its carbon footprint in totality and about individual Embassies around the globe. FCO is now leading the way in greener government and is meeting British Government targets on carbon reduction.
