Passport Application Tracking System

Situation

Finding out how your passport application was progressing, was a time consuming and laborious process limited by technical and security challenges.

Solution

Working with an external supplier, we created the Passport Application Tracking System. We solved some of the security and technical issues by using SSL (https) to secure data between suppliers and by creating a certificated log-on process to authenticate users. We used a number of Firewalls and intermediate servers to provide a filtered version of the data so that classified or sensitive information could not be intercepted by others.

Impact

Passport applicants can now receive up to date information about the progress of their passport applications. This has reduced staff time handling queries, and personal data about applicants is kept secure.
